TILT - Podcast Edition

Wow, this week flew by. As you may have noticed from the title, it's Chris again! (I use TILT. Heather tends to prefer the full title.) Last week I mentioned that I love podcasts because of their convenient, audio nature, and the chance they offer to learn. Podcasts are great to listen to while exercising, on your daily commute, or (if you're like me) instead of listening to music while doing working your brainless pays-the-bills job. ;) Here are a few of my favorites:

1. Shoot to Kill - Self-description: "Shoot to Kill: a podcast by photographers, for photographers". The StK staff consists of Phil and Mindy Thorton, a husband and wife wedding photography team at Phindy Studios in Nashville, TN. Their partner in crime is Jaime Clayton, also a wedding photographer from Nashville, distinguished by his preference to shoot entirely on film. Phil has a tendency to run a little techy, while Mindy is much more personable. Jaime helps to make Phil's technobabble to be more accessible by clarifying or asking for clarification.  I've learned a lot about photography, gear, the business, and more by listening to them. These shows tend to run about an hour, and typically includes an interview with another photographer.

2. Mars Hill Church - Yes, yes, I understand that this is not a photography podcast. It may surprise you, but I have a few things going on in my life, and photography is only one of them. This is Mars Hill Church based in Seattle, WA. The main teaching pastor is Mark Driscoll, and he tends to evoke a polarized response from his listeners. I like him because he speaks truth, and he presents it in a raw, no punches-pulled manner. He's got a great sense of humor, and a heart for telling people about Jesus and helping boys to become men. The sermons tend to run around an hour long, no shorter than 50 minutes, and usually no longer than 85 minutes.

3. The Dave Ramsey Show - Again, another podcast that isn't a photography podcast. Dave Ramsey (as I mentioned last week) is a financial guru based just outside of Nashville, TN. He has a radio talk show, where listeners call in (or email, or tweet) with questions related to their financial situations. His shtick is getting out of debt and building up wealth, but people call in with questions about everything from small business to retirement planning to wills to how to train children to be wise with money. He airs Monday-Friday, live online from 11am-3pm PST. The podcasts last 40 minutes, which is roughly the first hour of the live program.

4. The Village Church - The Village Church is based in Texas. The main teaching pastor is Matt Chandler. He is an excellent teacher with a bit of a quirky personality. I enjoy that he speaks truth, clearly speaking out about what the Bible says, not shirking from certain areas. He talks about tough things, ranging from prayer to abortion to serving in the community. His messages often run about an hour long.

5. Phototips - Here! Another photography podcast! This podcast is operated by Mr. Jimmy Beltz of Oklahoma City. He's a down-to-earth guy who loves photography, and enjoys helping you learn to be a better photographer. He does all sorts of portrait photography: seniors, weddings, engagements, and more. He's got an active forum for discussing everything related to photography. He also sponsors a small, in-house photography competition from time to time that is open to anyone. If you're interested in photography at all, I think you'd like this one.

Things I Love Thursdays - Chris edition!

Hey guys!
So sorry that we missed last week's post (completely slipped our minds >.<)! Anywho, to mix things up, we thought that I would put out this week's edition of Things I Love Thursday (I'm probably just gunna call them TILTs from now on because I'm a bit lazy :P) On to the things I love!

1. Dave Ramsey - I'm a big fan of this guy. For those of you who don't know who Dave Ramsey is, he's a radio host/financial adviser based in Brentwood, TN (just south of Nashville). His big thing is getting out of debt, building wealth, and living without the stress and intimidation of being a slave to someone else (Proverbs 22:7), and he does a lot to help his listeners and students to do exactly that.

2. Mousehunt - I'm kind of a gamer and a geek. This game isn't for everyone, but it's kinda fun when you play with other people. Basically, you have two trap components (the trap itself and the base) and bait (various types of cheese). Then you catch mice. It's more of a set-and-forget type of game, because you can only catch a mouse every 15 minutes, which is nice, because you can break away from the game at any time (in theory anyway!)

3. Reading - Whoa!! People still read, you ask? Why, yes! Yes, they do! I don't always have time to read, unfortunately, but I really enjoy it. I'm a longtime fan of fantasy and other types of fiction, but I also have an appreciation for non-fiction. I even post reviews from time to time about the books that I've recently finished on my personal blog.

4. Podcasts - This one's kinda connected to number 3. I really like learning, but, like I said earlier, I don't always have time to read. Podcasts, I've found, serve me quite well. I'm subscribed to all kinds of podcasts that cover all kinds of topics: finance, photography, sermons, etc.. I found that, though I don't have time to read, I often have time to listen to my iPod while I'm doing mindless tasks (like alphabetizing paperwork at my part-time job).

5. Guitar - I've actually been playing guitar for over a decade, but it doesn't always feel like it. I got my first guitar (part of an acoustic Yamaha guitar Costco bundle) from my parents on my 13th birthday, and I've been playing and learning off and on ever since.

Things I LOVE Thursdays- Music edition!!!

Hey everyone!
It's time for another things I LOVE Thursday!! I absolutely love music and decided that this week would be a good opportunity to share some awesome musicians with everyone. So here we go:

1) Tonight Alive:: The female lead singer sounds a lot like Haley Williams (Paramore) when they released the CD "Misery Business". The lyrics are simple, but they have a fun sound for those days where you want  a little edgy alternative rock. I recommend the song "Wasted Away".

2)Yellowcard:: This band has such a unique sound, I think because of their incorporation of a violin. They have been around since 1997, however they've definitely shaped the alternative pop punk genre with their mesmerizing sound. There isn't one song I can recommend, but definitely check out their CDs "Lights and Sounds" and "Paperwalls".

3) There for Tomorrow:: These guys played Warped Tour this summer and that's where I first heard of them. I don't know what it is about them, but I like their sound- it's a lot like "Tonight Alive", just with a male lead.

4) Eyes Set to Kill:: Don't let the name deceive you- they're not death metal. :) This band is composed of two sisters and their friends. The lead vocalist has a unique passionate tone to her voice, and mixed with the lyrics, causes the listener to feel the emotion in the song. Forewarning for those who may not like screaming, they have a male screamer/vocalist- he is INSANELY talented and his screaming is incredibly clear. The song "Reach" has the least amount of screaming in it, while "darling" has the most. I also recommend "Broken Frames".

5) David Gaulton:: For those who are looking for new sounds and songs in worship music, this guy has an amazing talent. It's more fast paced acoustic music, so you won't be lulled to sleep while you're listening to it. :) I was given his CD ("Beyond These Walls") as a gift and I seriously cannot stop listening to it. I recommend the entire CD to anyone looking for a new acoustic sound in worship music.
